Marble Sink Care & Maintenance
Natural marble is one of the most durable materials used in architecture and has been for thousands of years. With the right care, your hand-carved marble sink will last generations — developing a natural patina that makes it more beautiful over time.
Daily Care
Daily maintenance for a natural marble sink is straightforward. The goal is to prevent prolonged contact with moisture, acidic substances, and harsh chemicals.
- Wipe the sink dry after each use with a soft cloth
- Rinse away soap residue — it can dull the surface over time
- Use a pH-neutral, stone-safe liquid soap near the sink
- Dry the basin and exterior after heavy use
Cleaning
What to Use
- pH-neutral stone cleaner (available at hardware stores)
- Warm water and a soft microfibre cloth
- Stone-safe dish soap diluted in water for everyday cleaning
What to Avoid
- Vinegar, lemon juice, or any citrus-based cleaners
- Bleach or chlorine-based products
- Abrasive scrubbing pads or powders
- Bathroom sprays containing acids
- Ammonia-based cleaners
Why acids are harmful: Marble is calcium carbonate. Acidic substances react with it chemically — causing etching, which appears as dull cloudy spots on a polished surface. Even a few drops of lemon juice left on marble will etch it.
Do & Don't
- Wipe dry after use
- Use pH-neutral cleaners
- Seal once or twice a year
- Clean spills immediately
- Use soft cloths only
- Rinse soap away fully
- Use acidic cleaners
- Leave water pooled
- Use abrasive pads
- Use bleach or ammonia
- Place acidic products directly on stone
- Skip annual sealing
Sealing
We recommend applying a natural stone sealer once or twice a year. Sealing creates an invisible barrier that protects against staining and moisture penetration without changing the appearance of the stone.
How to Seal Your Marble Sink
- Clean and dry the sink completely before sealing
- Apply a penetrating stone sealer with a soft cloth
- Let it absorb for 10–15 minutes
- Buff away any excess with a clean dry cloth
- Allow 24 hours before use
Use an impregnating or penetrating sealer — not a topical coating. Brands like Miracle Sealants, Aqua Mix, or Lithofin are widely available and suitable for Calacatta Viola and Carrara White marble.
Stain Removal
Water Marks & Mineral Deposits
Hard water deposits can be removed with a stone-safe descaler. Do not use vinegar. Apply with a soft cloth, let sit briefly, then rinse thoroughly and dry.
Etching (Dull Spots)
If an acidic substance causes etching, the surface can be re-polished using a marble polishing powder and a soft cloth. For deep etching on polished finishes, contact us — we can advise on professional restoration.
Organic Stains
For stains from soap, makeup, or organic materials, apply a poultice made of baking soda and water. Leave for 24 hours, then rinse and dry.
Long-Term Care
Natural marble develops a patina over time — a subtle deepening of color and character that comes from use. This is not damage. It is the stone aging as it should.
With annual sealing, pH-neutral cleaning, and basic daily drying, a hand-carved Calacatta Viola marble sink will remain structurally sound and visually striking for decades. This is not a product that wears out. It is an architectural element that only gets better.
